Februrary Conservation GIS Short Course

The Geo Informatics Society of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society and the Society for Conservation GIS, USA have organised two GIS training programmes and a symposium in February 2008.

The basic programme is for beginners and no previous knowledge on GIS is expected from the participants.
The advanced training programme is for users of GIS who wish to be trained in advanced functionality of GIS.

The courses have been designed to facilitate the use of GIS for conservation.

Objectives: Strengthen GIS capabilities in state and cooperate sectors, NGO's and research institutions.

This program is especially tailored to field researchers who are working in disciplines dealing with nature and conservation.

No profit is expected to be made from these training programmes. Full scholarships covering total course fee and partial scholarships covering 50% of the course fee are offered to eligible applicants.

All the resource persons are either PhD holders or trained at ESRI in USA. In addition an eminent researchers in GIS/ GPS would also deliver lectures/ practicals.

Course content:
Basic Course (Max 30 participants)Principles of Geographic Information SystemsGIS functionality and analysisIntroduction to GIS software and applicationsGlobal Positioning Systems and applicationsCase studiesHand on GIS software training (ArcGIS). Students requirements will be considered as well as per the application form.

Advanced Programme (20 participants)Spatial analysis .3D analysisGIS modelingField data collection and processing techniques. Students requirements will be considered as well as per the application form.

Duration: Each course will be conducted for 5 days.

Basic Course From 17 to 21 February 2008 & Advanced course if there are enough requests.
Advanced Course From 25 to 29 February 2008 & Basic course if there are enough requests.

Feb 17-21 -Computer Centre, University of Peradeniya (residential)

Feb 25-29 -Colombo (non-residential)
